In a recent blog post Is Your Subconsultant a Liability?, we wrote about what primes should look for in a subconsultant. Here we present some thoughts on what subcontractors should look for in a prime-sub partnership.

downloadsp-3.jpgWhen subcontracting, choosing the right prime is crucial to the success of any architecture or engineering project. There are a variety of components to take into consideration when looking for a prime-sub partnership.

Subcontractors should look for primes who:

  • Value long-term relationships. They are not interested in winning only this project.

  • Select subs based on qualifications rather than looking for the lowest price.

  • Involve you from the start. Primes should not make assumptions for you.

  • Are interested in the same projects. This increases the chances of building a long-term relationship.

  • View you as an equal partner rather than a subcontractor.

  • Take you to client meetings. Communications with the client should not only move through the prime.

  • Pay you on time. Primes should be timely when sending and collecting payment on invoices.

It is important not to compromise on key criteria you are looking for from a prime. Finding a prime that works well with you without compromising the integrity of either firm will promote a better working environment, producing greater quality work and leading to satisfied clients.
